The mod completely replaces the vanilla engine, the author wrote his own implementation of the system that calculates the light and light changes in the world, when installing light sources, changing blocks, as well as when generating chunks, since their lighting is calculated. The author gives beautiful graphs that show the time spent on rendering light when installing the Starlight mod, with the Phosphor mod and in vanilla minecraft without mods, in all versions of the mod it shows a huge increase in performance (reduction of time required for rendering).
